
WHY PEOPLE CONSULT
Different motives will bring parents to consult for their children or adolescents. Usually, consultation will be triggered when youths report feeling anxious, sad, emotionally ill-at-ease, or when family and friends notice important changes in the youth’s behaviors. Adults consult when they experience some of the issues listed below, in order to develop a better way of dealing with such difficulties.
Examples of issues leading to consultation

Feeling sad or nervous in school, at home, at work.

Showing important learning difficulties, or difficulties with homework.

Having physical symptoms without any identifiable causes (headaches, stomachaches).

Having difficulties making and keeping friends (social isolation or aggressiveness).

Low self-esteem.

Timidity, having a hard time expressing oneself, lacking self-confidence.

Difficulties with siblings.

Difficulties with one’s children.

Difficulties related to parental separation or divorce.

Difficulties related to divorce or separation.

Difficulties adapting to a new family environment including step-parents, step-siblings, or a new partner’s children.

Any diagnosed disorder which needs psychological therapy (ADHD, anxiety disorder, mood disorder).

Any type of maltreatment (sexual, physical or psychological abuse).
